I was deployed to Thumrait, Oman, to support air
operations over Iraq during Operation Desert Thunder in 1997. I have more photo's at home, but I thought I would post one
of me in all my gear on a 100+ degree day.

As I said, it was over 100 degrees on the day this picture was taken. The truck I am using is a Mack R-9 Refueler,
which holds 5,000 gallons of jet fuel and can empty its contents into a hungry jet fighter in minutes. Oman is located south
of Saudi Arabia and is a desert climate. I spent six months at this remote location in the middle of nowhere. It was so hot
that the metal fuel pit lids located on the tarmac would get so hot, you could get third degree burns from trying to open
them. So, we always wore gloves to protect our hands from burns. Yes, you could actually fry an egg on them, as we tried one
to see. You also wore gloves because small critters (spiders, snakes, mice, etc.) would hide in the shade behind things. So,
you never wanted to grab something where you couldn't see all the way around it. This can be very uncomfortable in the middle
of the summer.
